Murraya paniculata, also known as the Orange Jessamine, is a tropical to sub-tropical evergreen shrub or tree with graceful pendulous branches and glossy dark green leaves divided into 3-8 oval leaflets. Throughout the year, the plant produces exceptionally fragrant, white bell-shaped flowers that are 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) across and borne in terminal or axillary clusters. These flowers emit a wonderful orange blossom fragrance and are followed by ovoid, bright red fruits on mature plants. The Orange Jessamine is hardy to 45°F (7°C) and can recover its beauty after an occasional light frost.
To grow the Orange Jessamine, start by cleaning the skin and flesh from the seed. Fill a small pot or seed tray with a seed-raising mix, place the seed in the mix, and cover it lightly. Water the mix well and keep it warm and moist until germination takes place. Covering the pot or tray can help increase humidity and speed up germination.
The optimal time to plant the Orange Jessamine is in the spring. The plant can grow up to 8-12 feet (240-360 cm) tall and wide, making it suitable for use as a hedge, screen, or foundation plant in areas where it is winter hardy. In summer, the Orange Jessamine can also be grown in containers on the patio or deck.
